Old Pictures

Heidi mentioned on my Unexpected Find post that I should share more old photos.  Well here are three more.  These are more of the pictures my grandmother gave to me.  She talked about them at the time, but I do not really remember much about them.  Written on the back of the first one, "Rapids of Niagara River as they approach the American Falls.  Picture taken July 26, 1939."  I don't recognize the hand writing and it very likely is that of my grandmother's sister who is in the third picture.  As best as I can tell the second picture is of the Maid of the Mist boat, which thanks to Wikipedia, I learned was in existence in 1947.  I have been to the Falls mainly on the Canadian side, so my guess is that the third picture is from the American side.  It does not say on the picture and I cannot remember if my grandma said.  I do know that the picture is of, from left to right, my grandmother, my father's oldest brother, his older sister, and my grandmother's sister.  At the time, my grandparents only had two children (they went on to have a total of 6).  My grandmother's sister and her husband were unable to have children so the sisters spent a lot of time together.  I remember my great aunt and uncle growing up and they were really generous to my parents and us.  She was 8 years older than my grandmother so she has been gone for quite awhile now.  I think the reason I got this picture was because no one else wanted it.  My aunt who is pictured has her back to the camera so I am sure that's why she let me have it.  I think there were more and these were the ones no one else wanted.  That's okay.  I like them.  Part of family history.

  1. Ann lives on the Canadian side near the falls. Want me to ask her if she knows which side those pictures are?

    1. Sure. Ann is welcome to stop on by & have a look. I have only been to the Falls twice on the Canadian side & once on the American side. We didn't actually get to see the falls on the American side. The elevator or platform was closed that day. If I remember correctly it was a holiday.

  2. It is good to chronicle your family history and to have lots of pictures. I do not have that luxury so I am jealous of others that have them.

I want to go to Niagra Falls one day.

  3. I love old photos, especially ones that are the same photo, years apart. I'd like to go to the Falls one day :)

  4. If you ever get the chance, you have to go. Make sure to have your passport because the Canadian side is the only real way to see the Falls. There are so many things to do too. I got spoiled when I lived in Erie. It was a two hour drive. We spent our first anniversary weekend on the hill. Had breakfast in Skylon Tower overlooking the Falls. Did the cable car ride over the rapids & the river walk along the Niagara. Plus there are all kinds of stores and restaurants. I am sad both me and my sister moved away now. Make it a long weekend & go!

    1. I forgot two of the best attractions: Maid of the Mist & behind the Falls. I recommend both as well.
